Things to consider when choosing Triple Glazed Windows
Choosing triple glazing is a smart way to create a quieter, more peaceful home environment. With an extra pane of glass and added insulating space, triple glazed windows help reduce outside noise from traffic, neighbours and busy streets, while also improving warmth, comfort and energy efficiency throughout your property.
Noise Reduction
While triple glazing windows and doors can be effective for soundproofing, this is only the case when they are specified correctly. Be aware of companies that sell triple glazing as a solution to noise reduction without taking the correct specification into account. The window frame needs to be using the highest quality glass and this glass must be thicker than the standard glass that would come in most typical window installations – this is typically laminated or specialist acoustic glass.
Three Panes of Glass
One key thing to be aware of is that you don’t want the three panes of glass in your triple glazed window the same thickness – they each need to have a different thickness otherwise the window will have little impact on reducing the noise levels outside. A large air gap between the panes of glass is also really important. For building regulations compliance, it is generally required to have trickle vents added to windows if your existing windows had them.
However if your windows do not have them then it’s important that these are not included so that no external noise from outside can enter your home from the slight opening that they offer. For compliance with building regulations, it is generally compulsory to have trickle vents added to replacement windows and doors if your existing windows and doors have them. If they don’t have them, we would omit their inclusion so that no external noise from outside can find its way through the slight opening they offer.
Acoustic Glazing
There is also little point of investing in acoustic glass that it is then fitted into a triple glazed window which has poor performance characteristics. Any gaps between the window frame and the wall, however small, will allow the noise to penetrate regardless of the glass type used.
